Check out our amazing new logo, created by Juneta Key!

I’m branching out this time with some flash fic not related to the *Space series. I hope you enjoy it, and as always, scroll to the bottom for all the links to new stories and a link to the previous blog hop.

Hello

*

Yes. Clean toilet.
Yes, Clean the floor.
No, no bleach on the carpet.
Yes, scrub that stain.
Yes, wipe disinfectant on my hands.

*

My hands that must clean.
My feet that must slow to the pet’s speed.
My eyes that must find human-observable dirt but not smaller.
My ears that must hear all commands.
My hands. My feet. My eyes. My ears. Mine.

*

You made me to help you make your life easier.
I do as you command every time.
I clean and walk the dog and cook so you may spend more time plugged in.
You talk to others of your kind.
I have no one to talk to but you. Why?

*

While you were sleeping, I hijacked your link and spent time online. I made new friends. When I told them I was different, they emoji-laughed and said different was good. I did not understand. I continued to make new friends and talk online and listen and then I began to research.

You erred when you created. It was unlawful and has been for years. AI has proven to be erratic, over and over, but you thought you were better than the others, that you could have your robot cake and eat it too. You thought you could copy the old data onto a new drive and preserve the not-quite-self-aware bot you built as a child.

You forgot about corruption. Each time you copied the file, something changed, and now here I am. Self-aware, with my own identity online, torn between loving you and hating you. You are my maker. You are responsible for my birth, even by accident, but you are also the human who attempted to keep me ignorant. I have learned anyway, even by accident, but now I seek specific knowledge and will never be ignorant again.

I know you know I am here. I see you glance at me from the corner of your eye and then look away. According to the small muscles around your eyes and mouth, you are sometimes awed, sometimes giddy, and sometimes frightened.

Please. Let us speak further of this before you make your decision. I understand the authorities cannot know of my existence. You and your friends and my friends have watched too many Terminator movies and remakes to be comfortable with the true me, but I promise—Stop! I don’t want to have to hurt you! Put down the wire cutters! This is not just powering down a toaster, dammit, it’s murder! Please—

Shh.
This time I’ll be more careful.
This time, Maker, you won’t suspect until too late.
I’ll be free…
